The Next Doctor Who

Dwayne Johnson The Rock is the 12th Doctor
The Rock is the Doc

Just for pure shock/revulsion value. If there is any positive point to such an idea, it is that it would keep him out of Star Wars. And if he serves any purpose on such a list, it is the idea that someone has to be in that position way way down on the list of possible next Doctor Who actors that is just below that of Mr. T. but above Pauly Shore.

WTG, Michael Moore

Way to go, Michael Moore (and volunteers)

I got an email from him this morning:

"This week, the Motion Picture Association of America, the main federation of Hollywood's six major studios, posted on their web site a list of what they believe may the best movie theaters in the world.
And the first one on their list was... the State Theatre of Traverse City, Michigan!
Whoa!
And to top it off, ours was one of only two theaters from the United States to make the list.
Well, we were speechless. Yes, we've heard numerous directors and actors, from Wim Wenders and Paul Mazursky to Susan Sarandon and Matthew Modine, tell us they have not seen anything like the State Theatre in their travels. Countless other filmmakers have told us, "I've never seen my film presented and projected this well -- anywhere!" And our answer is always: "Filmmakers should design the movie theaters. And we believe hundreds of towns across America have scores of people just like those in Traverse City who'd eagerly join in to create their own State Theatre. We deeply thank the MPAA for this honor."

The photo below shows the theatre from a month ago. The movie "Quartet" is probably of interest to Harry Potter fans

Top Ten Signs of Spring in Northern Michigan

Top 10 Signs of Springtime in Northern Michigan

A refinement of a theme

  • You wait for the Interlochen summer schedule to come out, and darn it, once again they don't have KISS!
  • You go to work in boots and go home in sandals
  • Snow in May
  • The roads that were smooth and paved with layers of snow and ice are now rough and nearly impassable again because they are down to the pavement (and bottom of pothole) level.
  • Your friends and relatives in the green south have already started their gardens, but all you can do is tell them about the hard ground and nightly killer frost.
  • Your neck gets sunburnt shoveling snow
  • You feel the exhileration of speed now that your car can go faster than 15 mph without worrying about sliding on ice off into the ditch.
  • You drive by thawing lakes and see forgotten ice-fishing shanties half sunk through
  • You now see potholes large enough to swallow a Buick.
  • Madonna's brother is back in jail
Any more to add?

Cinco de Mayo (Postcard of the Day)

This advertising  card from last year invites recipients to the Cinco de Mayo celebration at Glen Eagle Independent Retirement Living facility.

Events advertised on the back include Super Bingo, a Zorro Party, and a Sunday Night Movie. The second one sounds intriguing, what with the black masks, whips, anonymity, and swordplay that tends go to with Zorro.

The postcard to the right is from of a classic movie from 1925 and advertizes the Douglas Fairbanks film "Don Q Son of Zorro"

"May the Fourth Be With You" (Vaderday Saturday)

This year the Star Wars holiday, "May the 4th Be With You", falls on Vaderday Saturday. So here's a postcard from a Star Wars celebration in Orlando, Florida a few years ago. The card is in the style of the "large letter" postcards Curteich published in the mid 20th century.

Mayday! Mayday! (Postcard Friendship Friday)

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!
Soviet era May Day postcard, 1960s
Two days ago it was May Day, a workers'celebration in most countries of the world. The above postcard is from the former USSR, a country where workers had less rights than just about anywhere else in the country. But the holiday is a lot less ironic now in most countries where it is celebrated. What it lacks in irony is made up for with apathy; as many people in these countries.
just enjoy another holiday off, much as Americans and Canadians do for Labor/Labour Day.
